Drops

Sometimes I imagine that there is an ongoing and never-ending river, where stories flow as words and melodies. You know, sometimes a melody can tell a story better than a hundred words. By listening carefully, and allowing this water to flow over you, all the stories that have existed since the beginning of time and are known to the generations before us can be heard.

These stories convey memories of long gone gentle love, impressions of random meetings, imaginary moments where everything is possible, moments that have changed a life forever, moments of despair and hate, and moments of laughter and timid hope.

These songs and melodies are DROPS of that water. Small fractions of very personal and at the same time eternal stories, both, imagined and true.

TÄHTINEITO Säv & San Vilma Timonen/trad / STAR MAIDEN, comp. & lyrics Vilma Timonen/trad.

A maiden comes from the other side, from the island of great sorrow. She comes alone from the depths of night, along the wind-roads of the grim sea. She looks west, looks east, looks past the sun, saying: “Wind, bring me my own true love; churning sea, turn into mead; sun, carry my dearest to me; golden moon, tell my story.”

She steps down into the dawn, she reaches the dark doors of night. But the one she hoped for doesn’t come, isn’t brought there by the wind. They wanted to go to the house of the stars, wanted to hear the waves sing, to tell of the land of the stars. “Where is my own true love? Where walks my dearest? Golden moon, tell my story.”

Tuli neito tuolta puolen
Puolelta päivien pahojen
Saarelta surun suuren
Kohtalon kovalta puolen

Tuli yksin yön selältän
Polun pimiän pahoilta
Saaren synkän sopukoilta
Meren tuiman tuulen teiltä

Katsoi läntehen itähän
Katsoi auringon ylitse
Kysyi tuulelta idästä
Sarastuksen tuolta puolen

::Tuo tuuli minun omani
Meri vellova mesiksi muutu
Kanna aurinko kultani
Kuu kultainen kerro tarinani::

Astui alas aamun koittoon
Kuunteli sen sarastuksen
Astui päivän puolitiehen
Illan pimiän oville

Katsoi läntehen itähän
Katsoi auringon ylitse
Kysyi tuulelta idästä
Sarastuksen tuolta puolen

Eipä tullut toivottunsa
Illan synkeän sylissä
Eipä tuuli tuonutkana
Kulkenut käsissä auringon

::Tahtoi tulla taloon tähtien
Tahtoi kuulla laineen laulavan
kertoa tähtien maasta
Sadan auringon saavuttamasta::

Missä lie minun omani
Kussa kulkee kalleimpani
Kuu kultainen kerro tarinani

VIIMA Säv & San Vilma Timonen / GALE, comp. & lyrics Vilma Timonen

A cold wind in July, strange faces everywhere: a different country where I don’t know the language. Odd customs, a language impossible to understand. Small smoky restaurants. An unfamiliar part of town… I try to listen to ancient words, they melt in my mouth. I repeat my wish: come to me, my gentle, calm wind.

A freezing gale in December. Cold light, merciless light. The moon is pale, I freeze, grow numb with cold. I try to listen to ancient words, they melt in my mouth. I repeat my wish: come, my gentle, calm wind.

A promise of light in April: all my wishes come true. But in May, winter returns revengeful. Cold rain, falling words. So I try to listen to ancient words, they melt in my mouth. I repeat my wish: come, my gentle, calm wind.

Kylmä tuuli heinäkuussa
Kasvot vieraat joka kulmassa
Maa toinen, kieltä ymmärrä en
Tavat oudot, kieli käsittämätön

Pienet ravintolat, savuiset
Puoli kaupungin, jota tunne en

Koitan kuunnella ennen saatuja sanoja
Sanat sointuvat suuret suuhuni sulavat
Toistan toiveeni: tule tuuleni leuto, leppeä

Viima jäätävä joulukuussa
valo kylmä, valo armoton
Kuu kalpea, koskemattomin
Sormin soittaa, jäädyn, kohmetun

Kylmät kadunkulmat, kiviset
Katseet vieraiden, joita ymmärrä en

Koitan kuunnella ennen saatuja sanoja
Sanat sointuvat suuret suuhuni sulavat
Toistan toiveeni: tule tuuleni leuto, leppeä
Lupaus valosta huhtikuussa
Toiveet kaikki toteutuvat
Takatalvi toukokuussa
Kylmää sataa, puheet putoelevat

Koitan kuunnella ennen saatuja sanoja
Sanat sointuvat suuret suuhuni sulavat
Toistan toiveeni: tule tuuleni leuto, leppeä

TUULI Säv & San Vilma Timonen / WIND, comp. & lyrics Vilma Timonen

I thought the wind was on its way, I felt its glance upon me. I took it for my own. I wanted the feeling to come, to come with words and magic. I thought a ship would come, with words and magic, with great wishes. What I thought, I didn’t get. What I felt, didn’t exist. What I planned to do, I never returned to. Where I wanted to go, never happened. I looked at your face, listened and waited. I wanted to feel it – to hear the great words rain upon me – to fall into them and disappear.

Luulin tuulen tulevaksi
Kuulin katseen kohdallani
Otin omakseni
Tahdoin tunteen tulevaksi
::Sanoin taioin saapuvaksi::

Luulin tuulen tulevaksi
Kuulin katseen kohdallani
Otin omakseni
Luulin laivan saapuvaksi
Sanoin taioin saapuvaksi
Suurin toivein tulevaksi

Minkä luulin, sitä en saanut
Minkä tunsin, sitä ei ollutkaan
Minkä aioin, siihen en palannut milloinkaan
Minne tahdoin, sitä ei tullutkaan

Katsoin kohden kasvojasi
Kuuntelin ja odotin
Tahdoin tuntea sen
Kuulla lauseet laatuiset
Sanat suuret satavaksi
Niihin kaatua ja kadota

KUUTAR Säv. Vilma Timonen San. trad / MOON GODDESS, comp. Vilma Timonen, lyrics trad.

A woman hears the moon goddess weaving and goes to her. The goddess gives her gold, gives her silver: the woman gets gold jewellery on her brow and good silver to wear. She burns bright as gold, shines like silver. When she falls asleep on a grassy meadow, a thief watches from the bushes. He takes the gold from her brow, steals the silver from her. Crying, the woman returns home. Her father watches from the window, her mother from the storehouse steps. “Why are you crying, daughter,” asks her mother, “why are you weeping, my child?”

Kuulin kuuttaren kutovan
Päivättären ketreävän
Minä luokse luontelemme
Likelle likentelemme
Anto kuutar kultiansa
Päivätär hopehihansa
Minä kullat kulmilleni
Päälleni hyvät hopiat
Kultana kuumottamahan
Hopiana paistamahan

Nukuin nurmelle hyvälle
Kaa’uin maalle kaltiselle
Varas katsoi varvikosta
Otti kullat kulmiltani
Päältäni hyvät hopiat

Minä itkien kotihin
Kallotellen kartanolle
Isä katsoi ikkunasta
Äiti aitan portahilla
Ennätti emo sanoa
Mitä itket tyttäreni
Nuorna saamani nureksit

ILMAN VARJOJA Säv &San Vilma Timonen / NO SHADOWS, comp. & lyrics Vilma Timonen

I come from the dark, carrying you with me, my dearest. No shadows, no light – I stumble, wearied by the journey. I come from the dark, carrying with me you, my love. I’m stumbling towards you. I could reach for your hand but I have no more strength to stretch further, into the unreachable – so I give up.

You come from the dark, carrying with you me, your dearest. Words have been said, ornate sentences that meet this mundane reality. It forces me to close my eyes, to let go – to give up. The thought of your arms, your warmth, your beauty has kept me going. Now that all light is gone and the shadows have vanished with it, I’m forced to stop – to give up.

Tulen pimeästä
Kannan mukanani sinua, sinua rakkaintani
Ilman varjoja, ilman valoa
Matkan raskauttamana horjahtelen

Tulen pimeästä
Kanan mukanani
Sinua, sinua, rakkaintani
Kompuroin kohti
Tarttua käteesi voisin
Ei ole voimia kurkottaa kauemmaksi
Saavuttamattomiin
Luovutan

Tulet pimeästä
Kannat mukanasi minua, minua, rakkaintasi
On sanottu sanoja
Lauseita korullisia jotka kohtaavat
Koruttoman todellisuuden
Se pakottaa silmäni ummistamaan, irti päästämään
Luovuttaa

Ajatus sylistäsi
Lämmöstäsi, kauneudestasi
On pitänyt minut liikkeessä
Se että valo on poissa ja varjot kadonneet sen mukana
Pakottaa pysähtymään
Luovuttaa

DROPS Säv&San Vilma Timonen / DROPS, comp. & lyrics Vilma Timonen

My dearest, talk the trees into bloom, make sunshine with your words. Tell your stories, turn glances clear. Would you hear my whisper, would you hear me asking, whispering voiceless – would you feel the answers even if you couldn’t hear my questions? My love, my clearest, my dearest: sing till the seas turn to mead, droplets splashing. Smile with me, watch the moon with me. Would you hear my whisper – would you hear me asking, whispering voiceless – would you feel the answers even if you couldn’t hear my questions?

The questions make us wet, the droplets are splashing. These storm-whipped waves are crashing on the shore. I vanish into silence.

Rakkaani, parhaani, kauneimpani
Puhu puut puhtahiksi, säteet selkeiksi sanele

Kerro katseet kuulahiksi toista tuuli tuntuvainen
Kuulisitko kuiskaukseni
Kuulisitko kun kyselen
Kuiskaelen äänetönnä
Tuntisitko vastaukset vaikket kuulis kysymyksiäin

Rakkaani, tuntuvaisimpani, kalleimpani
Naura nuo meret mesiksi, pisarat pirskahtelevat

Hymyä kerallani, katso kuuta kuiskaele
Kerro katseet kuulahiksi toista tuuli tuntuvainen
Kuulisitko kuiskaukseni
Kuulisitko kun kyselen
Kuiskaelen äänetönnä
Tuntisitko vastaukset vaikket kuulis kysymyksiäin

Kysymykset kastelevat, pisarat pirskahtelevat.
Lyövät laineet myrskytuulen, hiljaisuuteen katoan
